Some of my friends wrote some very nice things about me for a dating website. I wanted to preserve the warm comments, but had no interest in the particular dating sight because it's filled with Romance Scammers. The concept was good, but too easy for the scammers to try and lure you into their web of lies. This is what my friends said about me.

I believe that there is a time and a place for everything and everything should have it's place. For instance, skinny dipping is cool (well, maybe chunky dunkin' lol -thanks Jaime, I'll never forget that phrase). I'm
pretty flexible when it comes to music. If I want to dance, I like rap and hip hop. If I'm cruising down the road, I enjoy hip hop or classic rock.

I'm content spending time in the local bars to visit with friends or just at home watching TV. I also enjoy going out for dinner from time to time, but it's not a weekly requirement. Once a month would be acceptable depending on the funds at the time. I enjoy going to local fund raisers, county fairs, local festivals, and being around people in general. However I also like my alone and private time with that special someone.

The best things I learned from my parents:
There are no 13.00 trees growin' out back.
If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it, because you can't take it back.
Life is too short.
Many more life lessons, just can't think of them right now :-)

When Does a Hug Mean Something?

other than JUST a Hug? Am I the only one who struggles with this? Do you find yourself hugging people just to hug them, especially someone you don't really know that well?? What does a hug mean? Have you ever been hugged by someone who you yourself were really into, had been dreaming about hugging and holding that person for a solid week, since the last time you saw them for only a few moments, almost obsessed with going to sleep every night, holding your pillow so tight, imagining it was that person and then......it happens, you see them out and when they see you, they immediately greet you with a hug. And of course, your heart races and you think to yourself......I GOT my hug!!! Now, a little more to this puzzling question to me is, this person and I don't really know each other that well, even though I know his family quite well for the most part, but in the past, he and I had never had any interactions, but to me, that hug meant EVERYTHING. I mean, he hasn't even been around to have any interactions with each other. That's all I could say was, OMG, I got MY hug!!! lolol Is this crazy? Was it JUST a hug to him? Does he greet everyone that way? Was it just a vibe he got from me a week ago? I really believe that anything is possible and you know, I'd love to believe there was more to that hug than your basic hug. Dang....mmmm, mmmm, mmmm :-) We'll see what happens when I see him again and after I've had a chance to observe how he is around other women. So, for the time being, I shall go back to my pillow at night, wishing it were him who I could be holding. If it's meant to be it will and if not, I've got another new buddy. Oh boy, lucky me lolol Story of my life. At least now, I've got that hug to hold onto and hopefully won't have that illicit dream about Dr. Phil again in place of wishing for that hug from someone real. LMAO Don't you hate when you can't control your dreams. I thought that was tooooo funny. Poor Dr. Phil lololol What a trip and a funny dream. It's like, where in the world did that come from lol

You know what they say, Free isn't always good and I have to agree with that. I'm on a couple of "free" sights and it seems as thought I get hit on by alot of guys who I believe are more than likely frauds and not really interested in meeting me. I have chatted with them online and they are extremely pushy and controlling. They expect me to just drop everything, when in fact, I do have a busy life and others things which I feel the need to tend to. There are so many internet dating sights these days, it's gotten very overwhelming, so sometimes, you're better off checking out the ones who others have had good luck with. There are so many internet dating sights anymore, almost too many to even consider. There is a dating sight for any type of niche.

Another new one has cropped up and almost sounds like a good idea. It's along the line of One Million Blogs where One Million blogs is promoting bloggers and their interesting blogs. This dating mosaic is based on pictures of people so you can go shopping for Mr or Ms Right using a visual tool. Mind you, it sounds all well and good, but it doesn't seem to be taking off very well. There was one man in the great state of Pennsylvania and I find that so hard to believe. Let's face it, aren't we all truly visual people. So anyway, here are their membership rules below.

I have to chuckle really because if you think about it, how many times in passing have you ever heard someone say to a man, are you a breast man, leg man or a butt man? WOW!! Am I wrong to assume that if someone's screenname is hornybitch and they're referencing how much they enjoy attention from men, does that not make you think that maybe they have alot of sex?? Well, apparently not, so the million dollar question would be.......Why in the world would you choose a screenname like that? Was it the last one available? LOL I doubt it. People can get so ridiculous when you assume something about them based on their screen name. I don't get it.

That's just one example of my frustrations for the day. So if you don't sleep around, don't choose a screen name which implies that you do. That's all I have to say about that for now :-)

I would love to just meet a great guy. Is he out there? I believe there are
two ways of meeting Mr. Right.

If you're only option is "the bar scene", then go with your friends, create

an office party setting, laugh and have a great time, be yourself and get

the courage (and I don't necessarily mean the liquid courage - lol) and

introduce yourself and your friends. Hey, who knows, you might find

that you're not that into him, but maybe one of your friends will have

met their Mr. Right. If you're lucky, they'll return the favor one day lol

Secondly, I believe that meeting someone through a friend of a friend

makes a ton of sense. I think that's the best way. If they come with a

Why do guys online try to use other people's poetry to try
and attract us. Do men think we are so needy that we'll
believe ANYTHING they type to us. OK, so I had talked to
this guy only 3 times maybe and mind you, he came on very
strong, right from the beginning (remember, his is the gal
who had a fella request that I send him 100.00 lolol). OK,
so I'm a pessimist.

OK, back to what happened. This very loving, friendly chap

Legislator considers an online dating law

Sounds like a good idea to me. There are lots of odd ducks out there
and pretty scary people. I tend to do my own background checks anyway
and I always encourage my friends to do them too. You just never know
if the person you might be meeting up with has had criminal charges
brought against them for domestic violence or whatever. Buyer beware!!
We have to look out for ourselves.

SPRINGFIELD -- A Southern Illinois Democrat is considering legislation requiring online dating services to perform criminal background checks to weed out predators that might be lurking on the Internet.
State Rep. John Bradley, D-Marion, said he was surprised to learn that these services were not required to perform background checks on members.

"One thing I was trying to come up with is a way to make sure you have a simple background check on somebody before you allow them to advertise," he said. "It seems to me that there should at least be a non-sex-offender requirement."

Bradley said he is considering creating legislation to address this potential problem, but a trade group representing the industry argues the regulation is unnecessary could be expensive and ineffective.

Rich Gosse, founder of the International Association of Dating Web sites, a trade group with over 100 members, said lawmakers mistakenly view online dating as more dangerous than other forms of meeting people.

"We recommend to people that they use common sense when dating on the Internet. Internet dating is not anymore safe or anymore dangerous than any other method of meeting people," he said. "I tell people that you can meet people in church and they could be a hatchet murderer."

Nationally, the Web site True.com has pushed for states to require online dating background checks, a practice that the Texas-based company does itself in least 44 states and Washington, D.C. However, these checks are not always statewide in scope.

In November, True.com filed a lawsuit against a California man who was convicted in 2001 of attempted lewd and lascivious acts with a child under age 14. The man had filled out a questionnaire on the Web site stating he was not a felon.

"I challenge the rest of the online and relationship and dating industry to follow our lead and show similar concern for their members' safety," said Herb Vest, the company's founder and CEO, in a related press release.

However, other dating services view the company's proposal as a ploy to push its competitors out of business.

"They are trying to get government to create a monopoly," Gosse said.

Gosse also suggests that in-depth criminal background checks can be expensive and still not uncover a felon's record.

"They still won't be 100 percent safe," he said. "There is no way of doing a criminal background check on somebody all over the country that will go through every courthouse in the United States."

Requiring more background investigations have become a popular for lawmakers.

During the recent veto session, the Illinois General Assembly approved legislation requiring medical schools to perform checks on potential students.

The soonest lawmakers could debate such a proposal would be in January.

Most people have heard of Internet dating services, but one company is taking the concept to new heights -- literally.

A 34-year-old man from San Jose who just moved back to the area is among the smiling faces and interesting personalities listed on the Web waiting to find a match. But this isn't your average hookup.

It's all about giving new meaning to the phrase "the friendly skies" by allowing air travelers to search online for fellow passengers who want to meet up in person on a particular flight.

It's done through a Web site called AirTroductions.com. The site was created by Peter Shankman after he found himself seated next to Miss Texas on a recent flight.

"She was phenomenal and she was the nicest person," Shankman said. "We had a great conversation and the four-hour flight took a very, very short amount of time."
New member Linda Dickerhoof, of Arlington, Va., said getting started was simple.
"You can post a picture if you like," she said. "You can post as much or as little personal info about yourself as you like. You know, male/female, your age range, where you're from, how often you travel."

It is free to set up a profile on AirTroductions.com, and also to do a search of who else is out there, but if you decide you want to match up with somebody before you catch your next flight, that will cost you $5.

"Considering that you're spending hundreds and hundreds on your flight, $5 to make it better is nothing," Shankman said.

Once the fee is paid, the site puts the two members in touch and they take it from there.

"If you meet someone on the site, OK. You don't have to give out any information," Shankman said. "You say, 'I'll meet you at the airport. Let's meet at the Starbucks near terminal C.' "

If there's a connection, it's up to the travelers to go to the airline to actually get their seats changed so they can travel side-by-side.

"We use the Internet all day at work. We use the Internet for grocery shopping, to buy plane tickets, to buy clothing," Dickerhoof said. "You know, using the Internet to choose who you're going to sit next to on the plane -- why not?"

For now, people may have a tough time finding a match on flights because the service is so new, but it only launched a few weeks ago and now there are more than 2,000 members.

Some Mat-Su unmarrieds look for ways to meet a mate

WASILLA -- On a recent Sunday, Angela Helvey sat at the Valley Hotel bar in Palmer with a cup of peppermint tea, a hardcover book of short stories and a sign advertising a new Mat-Su singles club.

Helvey, a 48-year-old substitute teacher new to the area, isn't looking forward to spending the holidays alone. She put out notices encouraging singles to come to the bar Nov. 6 and help her launch the group.

People stole glances at her as she read, but nobody sat down, Helvey said. "I felt like a hooker or something."

Some Valley singles say the region is, if not a romantic wasteland, at least a desert of married couples and people they've known for so long that any past chemistry has long since hardened into friendship.

Lacey McDaniel, 23, grew up in the Mat-Su and said the people she hangs out with are the people she's known since fifth grade. Dating one would be like dating her brother.

McDaniel is a bartender at Schwabenhof, a small, log-sided bar off the Palmer-Wasilla Highway. The sign at the beginning of the driveway depicts a buxom blonde holding three beers in each hand. Inside, all the wooden chairs appear handmade and steins decorate the windowsills.

McDaniel has been thinking of trying to start "speed dating" here, an event that allows people to sit down and talk to lots of other singles for a few minutes at a time, to see if anybody clicks.

But McDaniel said many young locals still see Anchorage and its larger array of restaurants and bars as their best bet for meeting someone. "The Valley is still very, very rural," she said.

Other singles of all ages turn to the Internet, looking for love at sites like Match.com, where a few hundred men and women -- mostly men -- list hometowns in the Mat-Su.

"Still looking for a dancing cowgirl," wrote one 64-year-old Palmer man, who goes by the user name "boots_bluejeans." Another man, 23, from Wasilla, warned he didn't want any "drama queens or drug feens (sic)."

He might want to meet "Outdoors Girl," the 23-year-old Wasilla woman whose Match.com profile says she's a boat captain and is as likely to go to a Hobo Jim or Joey Fender show as she is to spend the night dancing to hip-hop.

Maybe being single is no picnic anywhere, but the numbers hint that things are different here: 59 percent of Valley residents over the age of 15 are married. That's compared with a statewide average of 54.5 percent, slightly higher than the Anchorage marriage rate of 53.7 percent.

"You are a more married place," state economist Neal Fried said.

The news is a little better for Valley women than men. At 108 males for every 100 females, the Mat-Su is a sliver more masculine than the state average.

In Anchorage, the genders are nearly even, with about 102 males for every 100 females, while guys have a particularly tough time in Denali, where there are 139 men for every 100 women, according to Fried's state numbers and the U.S. Census.

Some singles say the Mat-Su's biggest problem is a lack of ways to meet people.

Ryan Johnson, a tall 28-year-old, said he recently finished the commercial fishing season and regularly takes classes at the University of Alaska Anchorage. But Johnson lives in Palmer, and when he goes to a local bar these days, it's to watch football, not in hopes of seeing any single women.

"It'll be, like, five guys and the bartender," he said.

In Wasilla, Helvey hasn't given up on starting a singles group.

Sitting in her living room last week, she talked about the challenges of moving here from Montana in August. Blockbuster DVD cases and paperbacks sat under the television, and a large quilt hung on the wall.

Internet dating services can be too expensive, she said, and men online care mostly about your picture instead of your personality anyway.

Instead, she imagines a regular group that could actually meet for coffee, play games or go to movies and serve as a way for people to widen their social circle.

She said she's encountered an almost bah-humbug attitude toward the idea so far, even among other singles her age, who may have given up on dating.

"Just checking out of life, almost," she said.

Internet dating sights help to cut down on fraud

Fraud? That would be the ones who are just out there looking to get laid.
The ones who are already married and abusing the online personals. I
personally get sick and tired of being approached for sex alone. I am
so much more than just a sexual being. Mind you, if I meet the right
guy who "I'm really into and he's into me" and we take time to get to
know each other as friends, I think both of us should be worth waiting
for to cross that line. Here is an article I read which is promising.
People who meet other people via the internet and find that they are
not who they say they are, should make it a practice of "reporting" them
to the dating sight management, so that they can address the situation.

Match.com's Enraght-Moony counters that the behavior in the online world is no worse than offline. Indeed, demand for online dating continues to be strong as the acceptance of it grows. In February, a survey by WeddingChannel.com found that 12% of engaged or married couples met online.

In order to attract customers, online dating services are trying to attract customers who are serious about meeting someone and leery of being victimized. They also are trying to differentiate themselves by adding premium services like more advanced matching.

Match.com's efforts have paid off. The company ended nine straight quarters of flat profit growth and boosted the number of paid subscribers by 19% in the third quarter to 1.17 million. Yahoo! doesn't provide membership figures. Membership gains were also seen by eHarmony.com and True.Com.

Fighting against scammers is a continual battle for the dating sites. Scammers can be difficult to catch because many are based overseas. Additionally, users often are embarrassed to admit that they have been conned. A news group, anti-spammers@groups.yahoo.com, has been formed on Yahoo! to monitor these scams.

"It's so damn easy to start a dating site," says David Evans, who runs the blog onlinedatinginsider.com. "You can put one up in an afternoon."

Negative ads? What is your take?

Any Internet dater is familiar with the personal-ad format: You toot your own horn to the point of ridiculousness and then, just so the reader doesn’t think you’re completely egotistical, throw in a mildly self-deprecating comment for good measure. If the ads are to be believed, everyone who dates online is intelligent, fit, caring, sensitive, and, of course, unmarried. But the truth is, anyone posting a personal ad is acknowledging their own singlehood, so when we read those self-aggrandizing adjectives, we know they mask someone more vulnerable than the ad might have us believe.

Aware of this, some posters choose to undersell, mocking themselves and potential respondents at the same time. They see their dark worldview as something to be proud of, not to hide, and post ads like “In search of bird with broken wing,” “Total jerk seeks total bitch,” or “Damaged Goods.” The philosophy is that honest, if negative, ads will reach the right people. And if these ads attract more psychos than the positive ones, at least the psychos make for more interesting dates, these posters say.

These days, e-mail is an essential flirtation tool for a whole generation of Americans. So are instant messaging, text messaging and message-board posts; but with those, people give you a little more leeway. Form there isn’t as important as content; there’s a reason to use as few letters as possible and no punctuation. And what you write disappears in the blink of an eye.

E-mail is different; it sticks around to be read and reread, even printed out.

Did she use too many emoticons? Did he really have to write ROFL to show he was laughing? E-mail falls somewhere between a phone call and a letter, but it has rules and pitfalls all its own.

“Instant messaging is better because the interaction is in real time,” says Phil Maggio, who writes about Internet dating under the nom de plume Sebastian Chance and found his wife, a native of China, in an Internet chat room. “People reread their e-mails and use words they wouldn’t use normally.”

“If someone doesn’t spell ‘you’ out in an e-mail,” says Alexandra Robbins, author of “Conquering Your Quarterlife Crisis” (Perigee Books, 2004), “I assume the writer is in middle school. E-mail is today’s form of a postal letter.”

It’s a scary thought. How good you are at cyberspace communication could determine your future – at least as far as your love life is concerned.

Great e-mailing can’t be taught. It’s a gift. Kristen Tubman, a 25-year-old who lives in Mount Washington, Md., and travels a lot, still remembers the first e-mail she got from a friend in Honduras after he had put her on a plane back to the United States. “The e-mail was all about the many buses he had to take to get back home.” She loved it, which says something about his writing ability.

There are potential hazards with e-mail as a way to get to know someone before you even strike the first key. Take a look at your user name, suggests Lesley Carlin McElhattan, an etiquette maven for the new millennium. (See the Web site etiquettegrrrls.com.) “It reflects who you want to be. If someone’s (address) is starwarsforever@aol.com, be wary.”

Still, for anyone who’s a little shy, e-mail is safer than picking up the phone and making that first call. “It’s easier than fumbling through a voicemail message they can’t erase,” points out Kermit Blaney, a 29-year-old who lives in Canton, Md. “The initial contact of e-mail alleviates all that.”

If nothing else, it can be proofread and reworked when it doesn’t sound quite right.

“Just as people used to fret about the rules on when to call someone back,” says Robbins, “now they agonize for hours over a four-line e-mail. Should I punctuate with a winky face? Will he think it’s a cute winky face? A sexy winky face?”

How you present yourself in instant messaging and e-mail has become even more important because so many people are using dating sites and online communities like MySpace.com these days. Sharon Frost, 26, whose photos on MySpace (myspace.com/khoney) draw plenty of admirers, doesn’t ask for much from the initial cyberspace message.

“If you just write to me and say, ‘You’re hot,’ I don’t bother to answer. If you say, ‘Your elbows are pretty’ as a way to break the ice, that’s different.” Frost, who lives in Ellicott City, Md., isn’t happy with “love your tattoos,” either.

Lori Burton, 26, responded to a first contact on a dating site by checking the guy’s profile, which seemed interesting, and then sending a two-paragraph, friendly, chatty e-mail with questions. She got this response:

“It been pretty uneventful as of late. Nothing good or bad happening. Well Hope you had a good weekend or our enjoying one. So what is it you do for work. Are your from maryland.”

“All spelling and grammar errors aside, even if you struggle with typing, just simply say, ‘Hey, I can’t type so well. Can I give you a call?’,” the Parkville, Md., resident says. “But this e-mail is an entirely unacceptable and inappropriate response. I just don’t have time to get to know someone two sentences at a time. Sorry.”

It’s a fine line. How short is too short and how long is too long? Strike a balance between being specific but not going overboard, says Kathleen Roldan at the dating site Match.com. “People are put off by very long e-mails. A rule of thumb is you should see it in one screen. Anything you have to scroll down is too long.”

Maybe the biggest problem with e-mail and instant messaging is that cyberspace communication feels almost like talking, but you lose tone and nuance. Sarcasm can come across as just plain mean. That’s the main reason emoticons have become so popular (although a “just kidding” works just as well as a smiley face if you’re not the smiley face type).

An e-mail is a first impression, like a first date face-to-face.

“Usually if people seem too eager, those I don’t answer,” says Amy Jarboe, a 30-year-old Towson, Md., resident who’s just getting into Internet dating.

Match.com advises members not to stay in the e-mail stage for long. “Just because it’s online dating doesn’t mean you’re dating online,” Roldan says.

But until you get to that point, all the date protocols translate into cyberspace, warns author Robbins. The guy who doesn’t read his e-mail carefully – that suggests something about what he’d be like as a boyfriend. As does the woman who talks too much about herself.

Roldan at Match.com agrees. “So many of the dating rules apply. Don’t e-mail every hour. Don’t bombard the person with thoughts every five minutes.”

Getting back to people quickly is important if it’s a potential dating situation, says Etiquette Grrrl McElhattan. “It’s the same as not returning a call if you don’t. “

If the e-mails are turning personal, get them off your corporate address as soon as possible, she says. “If it was a love letter, you wouldn’t share it with your boss.”

In general, McElhattan advises, keep things light if you’re getting to know someone by e-mail. And steer clear of religious and political content. “It can look nosy or proselytizing,” she says. “Do it in person.”

I realize that this article talks about gays in New Zealand but the concern
should still be there for everyone meeting new people via the internet.
This is such a pet peeve of mine, I preach safe sex to anyone and everyone
I know. It is so important to be aware of your own sexual health and to
go out, and just have sex, just because you want to have sex, especially
full well knowing that you have it is just WRONG to me. I think everyone
should be required to carry a sexual health passport. What is wrong with
people and honesty and monogamy!!! Why can't things remain the way
they used to in "the good ole days". People get married for all of the wrong

Finding themselves widowed or divorced, older singles are traveling through cyberspace looking for love, companionship or just friendship. Web sites that normally target younger daters find themselves competing with a growing number of age-specific online services such as Senior Friendfinder, SilverSingles.com, ThirdAge.com, christiansingleseniors.com, SeniorsCircle.com, and 50yearsplus.com.

The number of online dating site users 55 and over rose 19.4 percent last year, according to Nielsen/Net Ratings, a service that measures and analyzes Internet audiences. Latest available figures show that in July alone, online personals attracted more than 1.3 million Web-surfing seniors ages 65-plus.

"Sixty is the new 30," says Jim Houran, chief psychologist for the True.com dating Web site. "People are living longer and healthier and have disposable incomes. Online dating allows them to get to know a great deal of people they probably wouldn't have interacted with before, and in less time. They can cull a much wider dating pool when their opportunities for accidental meetings, meeting people at work or through family and friends are limited."

"There's increasing acceptance among seniors in online dating and increasing comfort with the computer for those seeking friendship and dating," says Tim Chanaud, spokesman for the Palo Alto, Calif.-based SeniorFriendFinder.com. Launched in 1999, it has become the largest seniors dating site on the Web.

When Judsen Culbreth, a West Orange resident, divorced at age 49 after 20 years of marriage, she thought online dating would never be an option.

internet chatrooms, only to be kidnapped and robbed at
knifepoint by a gang.

At least four Sydney men have fallen victim to the internet
dating scam in the past week. The gang trawls online dating
sites posing as women and entices the men into face-to-face
meetings in Sydney's west.

When the men - all aged in their early 20s - arrive for the
dates, they are ambushed and kidnapped at knifepoint. They
are robbed and later released.

This is pretty scary. Now do you understand why I totally recommend social
groups. I realize we don't live in Sydney, but who's to say things like this
wouldn't happen around here or anyplace else for that matter. We all have to
be so careful.

I found this article which resonated with how I feel about this topic.
People can paint a totally different picture of themselves online. There
is alot of deception and to really get the full picture of someone, you
almost need a recommendation from someone else. I think it sounds like
a great idea. Unfortunately, most of the online dating sites don't have
honesty ratings in regard to weeding out the liars. They are a dime a dozen.

of a new Web site, which happened early this year.

This new site is free where online daters review and share information
about the truthfulness of dating profiles.

Online daters are asked to post information on TrueDater.com about

Dating isn’t what it used to be, said Art Benson, director of
sales for Telepublishing International. Benson, whose company’s
personal ads appear in more than 800 newspapers nationally and
online, said societal changes have impacted socializing.

"Everybody’s busy and working," he said. "It’s a whole different
world now. In the ’70s and ’80s, you never would have seen a
Trojan (prophylactic) advertisement on TV, but now you do.
It’s not just dating, it’s everywhere."

Kristin Kelly, senior director of public relations at Match.com
in Dallas, said technology has dramatically changed socializing.

"When you look at our parents and grandparents, the way they met
other people was by virtue of the town they grew up in," she
said. "Now we’re much more transient than we used to be. People
end up in new cities and places and they’re without a social circle."

Both Kelly and Benson said today’s singles have much less free
time than in the past.

"Everything we do with our time is much more compressed,"
Kelly said. "Most of our lives are static. You get up, you go
to the gym, you go to work and you come home. You get into a
rhythm and you don’t always get exposed to new people."

Benson said some people who become jaded with traditional
dating turn to online dating. According to Kelly, Match.com
alone has 15 million registered users and 60,000 new members
joining every day, while "niche" Web sites like Jdate.com
(which caters to Jewish singles) and Catholicmatch.com have
garnered more attention.

Kelly said online dating offers the opportunity to meet
people outside of your daily routine.

"The ability to have a large volume of people over a wide
geographic area is what makes online dating popular," she
said. "Even in an area that’s somewhat isolated like McAllen,
there may be people who live there who can find 200 new
people in McAllen and Kingsville by searching within a
100-mile radius. That’s the beauty of online dating;
it exponentially increases possibilities."

Local residents have different opinions about the Rio
Grande Valley social scene and why they use e-dating.

Baltimore native Jenn Blair said meeting singles has been
difficult since moving to the Valley more than a year ago.

"I work the night shift," said Blair, a registered nurse
at Rio Grande Regional Hospital. "I’m not big into the bar
scene, and it’s difficult to find people in my age group.
There are few people in their upper 20s or lower 30s that
are single around here."

Blair said she joined a singles ministry at her church,
but hasn’t met anyone she wants to date.

Mike Heinz, who attends the same singles group as Blair,
said he joined the group last year because he wanted to
meet people outside of work.

"I moved here just over a year ago," said Heinz, who works
for Copy Express, a legal and corporate copy service. "The
people I was meeting were attorneys, or attorney’s assistants,
or worked at the court house. I joined (the singles ministry)
simply to meet people not in the legal industry."

Both Heinz and Blair said the Valley lacks places for singles
to "hang out" that aren’t bars. They also said culture and
language sometimes get in the way.

"With the culture down here, people marry very young," Blair
said. "There’s few single people my age here in the Valley."

However, Willacy County resident David Rios said he thinks
many people don’t seize every opportunity to meet others.

"There’s not a lack of places to meet people (in the Valley),"
he said. "There’s a plethora of places to meet people. It’s
just recognizing and utilizing them. Leave no resource untapped."

Blair said that she has had some success with e-dating.

"I think that in today’s society the Internet has given us
better chance to meet someone who is more what we want because
they might not be in our back yard," she said. "They might be
in Oklahoma or wherever."

However, there are trade-offs.

Some sites like eHarmony do not represent all lifestyles,
Benson said. The service E-Harmony only allows men seeking
women and women seeing men, and that’s not what the whole
population is," he said. "You don’t use eHarmony just to
find friends. They market it as, ‘We’ll help you find your soulmate.’ "

Benson said filling out a personality profile doesn’t always
help you find a match.

"For some reason people think more is better, but if I find
out way too much about you, what’s the appeal?" he said.

Signing up for Internet matchmaking services can also cost
time and money. Creating a profile on Match.com can take
45 minutes to an hour’s worth of careful consideration,
while eHarmony uses a 436-question "personality profile"
to find compatible matches. Prices vary from $13 to $50 a
month, depending on the provider.

Heinz said he isn’t interested in using online services.

"A number of years ago, I tried one of those things," he
said, referring to Internet personal ads. "I didn’t like
it. It was too impersonal and it required time. It’s not
really worthwhile."

While Rios has used e-dating for three years and said it’s
a good way to meet people, it still leaves something to be
desired.

"There’s no passion in Internet dating," he said. "A lot
of the girls on the Internet are very much focused on
getting married. There’s nothing personal there. It’s
lacking that intimacy."

Heinz said he doesn’t think finding love online is probable.

"As far as meeting somebody on the Internet, it takes to
long to get to know them that way," he said. "You never
really know them until you meet them. If people that truly
know you can’t put you together with someone successfully,
how can the Internet?"

Whatever method you choose, Benson said to be realistic.

"There’s no way you can know somebody just from their
profile," he said. "You don’t get to know somebody until
you spend time with them. On paper, they could be a perfect
match, but when you talk to them, you might figure out
there’s nothing there."

Debt Free?? Is it possible??

I say sure, why not. It amazes me that people think that people can
not live on 600 - 800 a month. This one woman told me recently that
she and her spouse live on 900 a month in a neighborhood of homes
worth $300,000 - 800,000. We are over 50 , kids raised and educated,
semi retired, no auto loans and we live on a several acres of
beautiful shoreline. They love their life and their home is worth
a LOT. They don't do fast food restuarants, but they sometimes do some
fine dining, plays, trips to the cities, vacations. What they don't do
is RECREATIONAL SHOPPING.

If you plan ahead, rid yourself of debt, you can live without being
tied to a large income. Of course when we are younger we did earn
and spend much much more..(that's how they got their lovely home and
paid for it.) They've basically already paid their dues and went
through life with a plan.

In defense of the means of dating that I found to be the most
comfortable and best way to meet some good people, I will say that
yes it takes patience and time. I met the bad people, I saw the ads
posted to every dating site, I had the people who seemed to just want
sex contact me, but I eventually got to a point where I felt I didn't
need to appease everyone contacting me cause they weren't all looking
for what I was. Personal ads and internet dating seemed to be the
best method that worked for me when it came to dating. I had my
strings of bad dates through the sites, which is why I never signed
up for a year but would sign up for a lesser time frame to see how it
went. I have met some of my best friends and my current boyfriend
through those sites. I will not knock internet dating and I won't
lie by saying it doesn't upset me that some people are claiming it
doesn't work just because of a few bad expereinces. We live we
learn. We internet date we learn. We date at all and we learn. As
we all know who are in this group...we have sex and we learn. There
are crazies and assholes out there no matter what and they aren't
just found on the internet dating sites. Anyone I met outside the
internet sites wanted nothing more than sex and even a few of them
wanted to rape me. I realize I could have found the samething
through internet dating sites, but they also allowed me to email,
write, correspond, talk on the phone, etc before meeting anyone. So
I will not condemn something that has worked for me. I am sorry most
people have had bad experiences, but again we can have bad
experiences in other means of dating as well....meeting someone at a
bar/club/restraurant, having friends set us up, meeting someone at
work, meeting someone through family...etc. Dating in general takes
time, patience, perserveance, hope, and belief that life and love are
out there and we all deserve to be loved and cared for to the point
that our bones and heart hurt thinking of not having it...even if to
the point of spurning us on to find it and keep it.

Internet boyfriend scams woman out of cash

A Hickman woman recently lost $4,400 in a scam pulled by someone she befriended through an Internet dating service, Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said.

The woman said the man, who claimed to be from Nigeria, mailed her a postal money order for $5,100 and asked her to wire him cash. The woman waited 10 days for her bank to credit the money order to her account before wiring the $4,400, Wagner said.

Shortly after the cash was wired, bank officials determined the money order was really a counterfeit and the woman lost her cash, Wagner said. The scam unfolded between Aug. 19 and last Thursday.

Wagner said it was the second fraud case in the past year involving a victim who was duped by someone she met through an online dating service.

I have to disagree. During my internet dating life, I met
several women within 24 hours of "meeting" and talking to them.
The course of action was as follows.

1) Engage in some form of contact through the site.

2) If there was mutual interest in getting to know more, ask if we
could move the discussion to the phone if she was comfortable with
that (very willing to just continue with emails too)

3) If phone conversation went well, look to set up a time to meet.

The sites are meant for people to MEET. If you linger too long
online, then you start to try to read into little things.
"He didn;t answer my email today", I IM'd him and he
didn't respond". You have doubts before you even met.

There are some bad apples out there, but i would say that if
women learned how to ask better questions on the phone part
of the process, you could just go mainly on instinct. If he
has trouble giving you clear answers or there are a lot of
"ummmms" and "I don't knows". He's probably hiding something.

The list posted just doesn't work for me. I really would like
people to have the same experience I have had recently, which
was fairly positive.

A man's perspective:

My experience to date has taught myself that internet dating
does not work. I have tried many sites over the years, and
have had zero results. I have had my share of very negative
responses and have encountered many rude women.

It seems to myself that many on such sites really do not wish
to actually meet someone to enjoy a relationship with.

Over the years I have noticed many of the same profiles
(active ones) and have seen many of them on multiple sites.

I first tried such dating 4 years ago and have met 2 women
and only met each one time.

The interest specific dating sites yield the same results for me,
such as Christian dating sights or STD status sights.

I hope others have had better experiences than myself.

I thought even a less than good looking man such as myself would
have had better results.

Eharmony seems like such a great matching system, but it's a frustrating sight for me.

The cost to make a match is a bit exoribant.
Both parties have to subscribe to Eharmony to make a match?
I'm not happy with the way the profiles appear either.
It's not easy to move around in their system.
The only way you can view a photo is if you have a paid subscription. I say: "Why bother, I live in a rural area and my options are limited anyway."

So I see this person logged on for the past few days, he doesn't say a single word to me, nothing and now I get this message today which appears to be something he is sending to EVERYONE on his messenger list. How lame and let me tell you........how romantic!!! NOT!!! lololol

Here is his note to me:

Hi pretty, how are you doing today? hope fine.If I was blind, you would make me see. If I was deaf, you would make me hear; and if I was dumb, a word would come out of the boundaries of my lips..am very happy to have a friend loke you (sent me one of those computer roses)

What is your favorite Internet dating sight?

Do you think they're worth your time? Your hard earned money? What are your thoughts on the many internet dating sights? Do you get responses? Do you feel like that special someone might be passing you up, just thinking they might find someone just a little bit better? I know I do.

I have gotten very skeptical about placing my personal ad on the various sights, but I did and now, I swear to God, the men from Africa, mostly white (oddly enough in my opinion) are all professing their undying love for me? Where's that little emoticon (or whatever they call it - lol) that has the mouth wide open shaking their head back and forth. Oh my........the nerve of them. One guy even asked me to send him 100.00. We had been chatting maybe two weeks. Now mind you, this guy supposedly owns his own company and he's "begging" me for 100.00 I'm like, does he think that I need a man THAT badly *rolls my eyes*

So anyway, I have my personal ad on match.com as well, but I think that my little town/zip code is really not in their database, because I'm not an unattractive person, and I'm alot of fun to be around.......or so I thought I was. I keep tellin' guys, all I need is some extracurricular activity in the bedroom and lots of it and I'll lose weight, no problem. One day, they'll be saying......dang, I let that one slip right on by. lol I tangent again :-)
